03 Oct On passion

And the starting gun goes off! You begin to run, slowly at first. You know that you have 42 km to go in this race, and you will need to keep your mind on every meter that goes by. You need to judge your speed just right so that you are moving fast enough to keep up, but not so fast that you tire yourself out early. At the same time, adrenaline is pumping through you- you are ready for this. You have trained innumerable hours. You have lived, breathed and dreamed about this one big race. This is your calling and your joy.

This is the reality of life as an entrepreneur. You ready yourself for the big race, the plunge into the market and the real world of business. It is your passion and your excitement. But the entrepreneurial life isn’t easy. You have years of hard work and sometimes slow, sometimes fast progress ahead of you. Like a long-distance runner, you have to pace yourself, reaching for your full potential, but not overdoing it and burning yourself out. The run itself is what you love, the act of working hard every day to see your dream, your company, survive and flourish. You will need to adapt to many new situations and be resourceful with your energy and time.

“There is no passion to be found playing small – in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.” ~ Nelson Mandela

Passion is the energy and excitement you feel when you get up each morning. Without it, how can you enjoy what you do every day? How could you summon up the inspiration and desire needed to put your all into something without the fuel that passion provides? That’s why you need to be doing something that you absolutely love. When you are passionate about something, you are naturally better at it than others who don’t share your passion. When you add skill, talent, and hard work to the foundation that passion provides, you can create something extraordinary.
